Shades of Play - Derreuq

Meet Derreuq - a sonic architect weaving narratives through rhythm and frequency. Each set, mix, and production is a chapter in an ongoing story—one that invites listeners into immersive soundscapes where music becomes memory.

Derreuq is a Washington, DC–based DJ, curator, technologist, and co-founder of the electronic project Shades of Play. With a musical identity shaped by Midwestern Native American, Black, and South American lineage, his sound is deeply rhythmic—fusing primal percussion with hypnotic grooves, dark textures, and genre-blending fluidity.Behind the decks, Derreuq is known for commanding, intentional sets that evolve between deep house, techno, tribal rhythms, and progressive elements. His approach is immersive: a balance of precision mixing, emotional pacing, and instinct-driven storytelling designed for both introspective listening and peak-hour dance floor energy. As one half of Shades of Play, Derreuq brings the project's live performance and DJ identity to life. While creative partner Felipe Rivera leads studio production and sound design, Derreuq brings that vision to life on stage—transforming sets into atmospheric, immersive experiences. Recently they have teamed up with visual artist/tech guru, Melaine Bell, to curate Night Currents—storytelling sessions with full visual immersion.Performances include: Halcyon SF, Flash DC, TBA Brooklyn, SITH Boston—alongside Kevin Yost, Guti (Live), Anthony Attalla, John Dalagelis, Dave Seaman, and others.Driven by intention and movement, Derreuq and Felipe continue to evolve—building culture, community, and unforgettable sonic space.
